What's Left of the Republican Party, the Evangelical Subculture?
Is the fundamentalist right now the base of the Republican Party? Frank Schaeffer, author of the book, "Crazy for God", appeared on MSNBC'S Rachel Maddow show and unleased a torrent of accusations that, among other things, "The evangelical subculture has rotted the brain of the United States of America", and infers republicans are pandering to that group for support. He goes on to say, "We have a village idiot in this country, it's called fundamentalist christianity".
Rachel started the interview citing a recent survey taken in New Jersey, that seems to indicate that one out of three conservatives in that state either believe President Obama is the Anti-Christ, or aren't sure.....

Wow! This guy sure doesn't pull any punches! As a dyed in the wool liberal Democrat I, of course, agree with him. But I thought I was out there in the wilderness pretty much alone. Not so, I learn! I strongly believe the fear-mongering, absence of civility, me-first atmosphere so prevalent right now is extremely dangerous and it's going to take active effort by all thinking people to keep it in check. It doesn't do any good to talk reason to them, their vocabularies are too small. (A little ad hominem there - sorry.) Obviously, it'll take cooler heads than mine. DT
